The Commonwealth Games might be scheduled for October, but the traffic plan for the event is already being put in place. The extreme right lane on all routes leading to the venues will be set aside for Games-related traffic. After the lanes are painted blue by the end of June, the traffic police is expected to start awareness drives to sensitise drivers on how to use roads with lane restrictions.
At a high-level meeting of the core group on Commonwealth Games chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna earlier this month, detailed transport and traffic circulation plans, entry and exit points and parking slots were finalised. The plans will get a final shape at the next meeting to be chaired by the L-G in June-end.
OPENING & CLOSING CEREMONIES
Newsline got access to the plans for the Games opening and closing ceremonies on October 3 and 14. The key points:
ACCREDITED LANESIt has been decided to earmark the extreme right lane on Games routes as an accredited lane with blue bands bound by yellow lines and having the CWG 2010 logo in white. The blue bands will be painted at every 500 metres on this reserved lane, and also at the entry and exit points. The lane-changing arrows will be in yellow. Along with the Games vehicles, police vehicles, ambulances and disaster management vehicles would also have access to these accredited lanes.
BUSESThe 140 DTC buses, which will ferry the 7,000 artistes from the Army Parade Ground to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, will have colour codes and numbers. The Lieutenant-Governor has asked for porta cabins with toilets for drivers at the Army Parade Ground, where the buses will be stationed. All buses that carry artistes, schoolchildren and other VIPs would move on these reserved lanes and the road owning agencies will paint these lanes as per guidelines and colour codes approved by the L-G. To ensure that transport and security resources are focused on the opening and closing ceremonies and to avoid any untoward incident it has been decided that the Organising Committee will not schedule any special training or practice on these days.
PARKINGIt has been decided that additional VVIP parking could be created in the green area outside the stadium. Expecting around 300 such cars, the Delhi Police had requested to create a new car parking for the VIPs,special invitees and VVIPs near the West Gate,on areas earmarked for landscaping. The Organising Committee had also requested space for 22 cars in the VVIP car block for sports dignitaries. As per the calculations so far,the opening ceremony will have close to 7,700 guests as special invitees, including VIPs and VVIPs.
MOVEMENTThe Central Public Works Department has been asked to create channelisers for secure movement of artistes and schoolchildren. The request was put up by Delhi Police also to differentiate them from spectators. All artistes and spectators entering the stadium would be checked for security at the entry point by the Delhi Police.
