Kiss the Frog

Blue Frog leaps into the Capital, sending traffic and music mavens in a tizzy.

In any Mumbai vs Delhi debate, the denizens of Maximum City would inevitably flaunt one trump card — Blue Frog, the Mecca of music, which the Capital couldn’t boast of. In this club, live music meets the right crowd and the right ambience, making it a crucial part of Mumbai’s buzzing nightlife and music scene. Get ready for the same in the Capital, now that Blue Frog has opened doors in Mehrauli. After years of depending on Hard Rock Cafe,Cafe Morrison and a number of other gig spots,Delhiites gave Blue Frog a rousing welcome — the party went on till the small hours as 1,300 guests turned up.

Located at The Kila, opposite Qutab Minar, the club is a bigger version of its Mumbai counterpart with an elevated console, the dance stage in the middle, round seating in water puddle-like holes, with huge mushroom heads hanging from the ceiling. Apart from the club,it contains a cafe,a fine-diner called Azimuth (which will open next month) and a performance stage on the terrace.

Surprisingly, even though the party was on a weekday,Delhi refused to call it an early night. Seen at the launch were familiar faces — quiz master and MP Derek O’Brien, designers Suneet Verma,Ritu Kumar,Nikhil Mehra,JJ Valaya and Nida Mahmood, actor Naseer Abdullah, restauranteur AD Singh, and Dr Naresh Trehan with wife,Madhu. What set the party roaring was an eclectic performance by French electronic music band,Nojazz, followed by a night of spins by UK-based DJ Paul Thomas.

Irrespective of how elated we are at the prospect of a Blue Frog in Delhi’s nightlife scene, the arrangements at the party could have been better. Outside the venue,a traffic jam was a dampener. In the absence of adequate parking, the venue was so jam-packed that many guests talked about heading to other clubs. Till midnight,it was next to impossible to enter the club and many people just partied in the courtyard.

However, this grand party provided a peep into how things will be in the future. With such a huge space and a great line-up ahead,Blue Frog will give a very stiff competition to the Kitty Sus and Laps. The entry is also inexpensive — Rs 300 on weekdays and Sundays and Rs 600 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Anyone up for a Delhi-Mumbai debate again?
