The opening day of admissions at Delhi University brought confusion for many SC/ST candidates seeking admission at the SBTB Khalsa College. Students have alleged that names of many students featuring in the SC/ST list for the college have been struck off by the college and that only a few names remain on the list. The college authorities told us that students whose names have been struck off will not be admitted as their seats for the quota would be full. But we have been issued this slip by the university, what are we going to do now? Himanshu Singh, who had come along with his mother, said. He was pleading his case at the office of the Dean of Students Welfare. Himanshu later told Newsline that counsellors at the deans office asked him to go to the college on Saturday and ask the college authorities to give in writing that they are refusing to admit students to bring it on record,so that action could be initiated at the earliest. The deans office also assured us that they would look into the matter, he said. SC/ST admissions are controlled centrally by the university and not by individual colleges. Khalsa College had last year said it would not implement the OBC quota and the matter is sub-judice at the Delhi High Court. The reason the college is giving for not admitting some SC/ST students is that as they are not implementing the OBC quota, they have not increased the SC/ST seats like other colleges. The university has, however, issued admission slips according to the increased number of seats. We are asking all such candidates to wait till tomorrow. The university is writing to the college and the matter will be solved one way or the other pretty soon, Joint Dean Students Welfare Suman Verma said. He said the deans office was in touch with the college administration and the students need not panic. We are working for their welfare. The university will take care of the matter, he said. However, the college is standing firm and maintains it will not admit students according to the increased seats. We are not taking OBC students and, therefore, are not required to increase our seats. That is why we have decided that we will admit only the strength sanctioned in 2007 (Pre quota implementation) in all categories, including SC/ST, Dr Jaswinder Singh, principal of SGTB Khalsa College, said. Singh said the college is committed to giving admissions to SC/ST students but only according to the earlier quota. We have told the university time and again about the problem, the matter is sub-judice and hence we cant take in more students than the strength sanctioned to us in 2007 by the university, he said.
