Simla Youngs registered a 2-1 victory over Sports College,Dehradun in the 31st in the North Zone qualifying round for the Federation Cup played at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurgaon on Monday. The winners led 1-0 at the half-time through a goal from Nigerian Jude Ibekwe in the seventh minute. Despite complete domination by the Sports College boys in the second half,Youngs doubled the lead against the run of play. Judes compatriot Samson found the back of the net in the 77th minute.
The Dehradun team pulled back one through Sandeep Chauhan three minutes later but that never made up for the chances they had frittered away in the second 45 minutes.
Delhi begin against MP
The Delhi team left for Cuttack to participate in the 8th Girls Junior National Football Championship.
Delhi will begin their campaign against Madhya Pradesh on November 26,followed by their second and final group match against Orissa two days later. Govt Senior Secondry School defender Saloni will be leading the 20-member squad for the national event while Jesus & Mary College midfielder Niharika will be her deputy.
Twenty Seven teams will vie for top honours in the championship starting from November 24. The teams in the preliminary qualifying round have been divided in eight clusters of three each.
Winner from each cluster will qualify for the quarter-finals to be held from December 1- 5. The semi-finals will be played on December 8 and 9 while the final is scheduled for December 11.
Hosts Orissa will take on Madhya Pradesh in the inaugural match of the event on Tuesday,followed by Tamil Nadu versus Bihar. In other matches,Manipur play Rajasthan while Tripura take on Chandigarh.
