Khaki comfort

They stood humming the tune of the ‘Lokpal anthem’. They tapped their feet and clapped to Vande Mataram and Raghupati Raghava Rajaram. The uniformed men were everywhere; across the stage, around the Ramlila Maidan, amidst the crowd and atop the watch stands. But at the Ramlila Maidan, which had previously witnessed the infamous police crackdown on Baba Ramdev’s yoga camp, none of the khaki-clad men seemed the usual tired lot. “I have been here since 6 am. But I don’t feel exhausted. I have been on duty for many processions. This was a large one. Thousands had gathered, but the crowd behaved,” said a constable posted at the Fatehpur Beri police station. The 28-year-old was also on duty during Ramdev’s yoga camp and said this was a more relaxed.

SMOOTH Traffic

As thousands gathered outside Tihar Jail, waiting for Hazare, the traffic police personnel did not seem perturbed. Parking, too, was under control, senior traffic officials said. Supporters and visitors had parked their vehicles in parking spaces allotted to them earlier,at the Mata Sundari Road and Asaf Ali Marg. “There were no diversions or roadblocks in the city today. Congestion was witnessed on the carriageway from Tihar Jail to Mayapuri Chowk, which took just 15 minutes to clear. Those commuting on the route had either joined the procession or taken alternative routes,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg.
