Dancer Gilles Chuyen had a message for the audience during his performance at the American Centre on Tuesday evening If you want to save the earth, cut out the plastic, he said as he twirled round the stage with three dancers to depict how human excesses was choking the planet. The show, called Prakriti, was held in association with NGO Kriti to celebrate World Environment Day.
The dancers filled the bare stage with energetic movements, their only props being a multitude of polythene packets that they strapped onto themselves to depict how urban life was enmeshed in harmful plastic. The theme of the piece is that I am the earth and the earth is me, said Chuyen. Packets of chips landing at my feet was the source of inspiration for this performance. We tend to forget that earth also belongs to the birds and beasts, and weve no right to destroy their habitat by using non-biodegradable material. He combined Indian and western dance moves to the accompaniment of forest sounds and bird twitters. The festival aims at bringing people closer to nature, and what better way than dance? says the Kriti team leader Aanchal Kapur.
