Flying High

You have heard of power yoga, passion yoga and even Shilpa Shetty yoga, now get ready for Acroyoga.

You have heard of power yoga, passion yoga and even Shilpa Shetty yoga, now get ready for Acroyoga. Yoga meets acrobatics and Thai massage and boasts an American descent— it was founded by New York-based Jason Nemer and Jenny Sauer-Klein—- and is being introduced to Delhi by London-based dancer and Acroyoga expert Yamuna Chaudhari.

Acroyoga is about bonding with others in the class. “It combines the spiritual wisdom of traditional yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics and the loving kindness of Thai massage. A typical Acroyoga class begins with people talking about how they feel. There’s a lot of chatting and exercises are done in a circle or in pairs,” says Chaudhari.

The high point of Acroyoga is therapeutic flying,in which a person lies flat on the floor and his or her partner is suspended upside down on his outstretched legs. “This exercise helps strengthen the spine and builds the stamina of the ‘base person,’ and improves blood circulation in the flyer,” says 19-year-old Chaudhari.

Chaudhari’s British mother is a yoga expert and she has grown up practicing asanas. “Typical yoga is serious and people hardly look at one another. Four years ago, when I was introduced to Acroyoga,I was floored by how friendship was the predominant feeling,” she says. Two years ago,she turned Acroyoga instructor and has traveled to Greece and Austria to popularise the form but it was the response in India that has surprised her. “ People here are open to learning a new exercise method,” she says.
