Flooding the Walls with Art

Artist Ranbir Kaleka’s black-and-white sketch titled Man with Torch: Receding Flood shows a bearded man wearing a grim look,with a torch in his hand,searching for a loved one,while his feet remain soaked in water. A metal sculpture by installation artist Neeraj Gupta,two metal pots atop each other,decorated with glass on the sides,has everyday items and scrap metal. These works are part of the exhibition “Art For Uttarakhand” at Rabindra Bhavan Gallery in Lalit Kala Akademi,where more than 135 artists have come together to raise funds for flood victims. Shovin Bhattacharjee’s work named First Breakfast has lent a new dimension to a dining table by giving it pillars below with teacups surrounding a golden kettle.

The exhibition displays the artworks of artists such as Sanjay Bhattacharya,Anjolie Ela Menon,S H Raza,Manu Parekh,Raghu Rai,Paresh Maity and Arpana Caur alongside the works of young upcoming artists. “Over the last 50 years,artists in India have come together to raise funds,from the crisis in Punjab and Kashmir to tsunamis and earthquakes. We stand united once again,” says artist Jatin Das,whose work is also on display.

The exhibition is on till July 16 at Rabindra Bhavan Gallery.
