DU declares admissions open

The summer sun mellowed a little on Friday, but the heat was on at the Delhi University as sale of pre-admission forms for undergraduate courses began.

At South Campus, the day started an hour early as the authorities, with an eye on the waiting crowd, decided to open windows at 9 am.

As expected, all roads leading to the Arts Faculty in the North Campus were clogged. The ongoing construction for the Commonwealth Games by the side of the road did nothing to ease matters. Unfortunately,no signs of the new traffic plan were visible on the stretch. The plan was to be implemented by Friday, according to the Proctorial team.

Then there were complains: “I wish there were more student counsellors,” said an aspirant, who had come from Panipat with his parent.

According to officials,14 student counsellors will be deployed at the Dean Students’ Welfare Office

Students were also confused about the Other Backward Classes certificate. “I thought OBC certificate was required for applying in the OBC category, but I got to know that only the certificate number is required,” an applicant said.

For some the wait to fill in forms, ended with shattered dreams .

Virender Singh Chaudhary, who wanted to apply through sports quota said: “I wanted to apply in sports quota for Yoga, but I was informed that no DU college has Yoga in sports.”

Deputy Dean of Students’ Welfare,Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, sounded a warning: “Exceptions can be made in case of mistakes while filling in the boxes, but mistakes in filling or darkening of the circles cannot be exempted.”

The National Students Union of India (NSUI),meanwhile, held a protest at the Arts Faculty gate. Around 2 pm,a group of about 15 sloganeering youngsters led by NSUI general secretary Mohammad Shahnawaz Choudhary obstructed traffic for a good half an hour.

The protesters also directed their anger at Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental, but no one seemed to know the purpose of the protest. Newsline asked a member of the group, who was getting down from a bus and shouting slogans, about what they were protesting against. “They have broken a statue,” he said. On being asked which statute was broken,he responded,“Who cares,” before dashing off towards a cycle-rickshaw.

The protest was reportedly about the statue of B R Ambedkar, which was demolished along with the former office of the Delhi University Students’ Union.
