Doctor denies kidney stolen during stone operation

A day after a man lodged a complaint saying his kidney was “stolen” during a kidney stone surgery at a Shahdara nursing home in 2001,the surgeon who conducted the operation denied the charge on Monday.

Dr Rajendra Pal,the surgeon at Shanti Nursing Home who operated on Devender Gupta, said Gupta was informed that his kidney would be removed. “It was a diseased,non-functioning kidney,” Pal said. “We had informed the patient that his kidney was being removed.”

Ironically, the nursing home also does not have documents to substantiate the surgeon’s claims. The nursing home authorities claim they took signatures — something Gupta does not deny — but have no record to prove it. Pal’s explanation is that Medical Council of India rules mandate nursing homes must have records of the past three years, and 2001 is way off that limit.

“Moreover,we moved our nursing home to the present location in April 2003,” he says. “The papers got misplaced in the process.”

Gupta today said he signed the papers in a hurry but was never informed that his kidney would be removed. He said he gave the papers to a “friend”,who misplaced them.
