As the IPL semi-finals move to Navi Mumbai following the blasts outside Bangalores Chinnaswamy Stadium and more crude bombs were found nearby on Sunday - in Delhi the police conducted a security audit.
The audit was carried out ahead of the Commonwealth Games to assess the security risk of various landmark buildings and popular areas. These include Connaught Place,Akashvani Bhawan,Lajpat Nagar market,South Extension,Qutab Minar,the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),Dilli Haat,New Delhi Railway Station,Metro stations,hospitals and Delhi University campus.
More elaborate security measures have been suggested for these sites.
The audit was carried out by the district police in coordination with the Special Cell the anti-terror wing of the Delhi Police.
Declining to provide details,an officer said: Of the nearly 500 such buildings or places,a majority are in posh Central and South district ranges.
But the Delhi Police,however,denied that their audit named 500 sensitive installations. The Public Relations Officer,Delhi Police,Rajan Bhagat said the Inspector,Anti-Terrorist Operations (ATO),of every police station. The officers visited every building in their area and recommended suitable safety measures.
The audits were done in three ranges Northern,Southern and New Delhi.
The buildings were graded on four broad categories and the suggested measures included the installation of latest surveillance equipment and posting of armed guards.
The direction by Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal on conducting security audits were given to Joint Commissioners in-charge of the three ranges,which were subsequently passed on to the Deputy Commissioners of Police. We regularly carry out such exercises to prevent any untoward incident, the officer said.
