With Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit sounding the alarm on power shortage already affecting the Capital,Union Minister of Power Sushil Kumar Shinde today allocated an additional 100 MW to Delhi from the Central unallocated quota. The Capital is facing a 20-per cent increase in demand as compared to the corresponding period last year, and officials fear the allocation may prove too little.
With residents across the city from areas like South Extension,Mayur Vihar to Naraina already complaining of powercuts, the Power department is stretching far and wide to find additional sources. The chief minister has apprised the Union Power minister of the situation. He has also been requested to curb other states from drawing over and beyond their allocated quota, a senior Power department official said.
A statement issued by the Chief Ministers Office said Shinde has assured Delhi that maximum power will be made available from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) in time for the Commonwealth Games. The DVC,which was supposed to begin providing Delhi with 400 MW nearly two years ago,and then steadily increasing the supply,is as of now only supplying 40 MW to the Capital. By the summer of 2010,DVC was to provide at least 837 MW to Delhi.
Shinde further stated that there will be no shortage of power during the Games, for which all arrangements have been made by the Power ministry, the statement adds.
The issue of power overdrawing by the neighbouring states was also raised in Dikshits meeting with Shinde. As per the grid regulations, when states begin to draw power beyond their allocated amount, the frequency in the grid dips, necessitating load-shedding. In such a scenario, even if we have enough power,we have to carry out load-shedding to protect the Grid from an immediate collapse, the official explained.
The Power department is,meanwhile, also concerned about the delay in commissioning the Bawana power plant, which was to scheduled to have begun operations by the end of March. Delhi is relying heavily on the availability of power from Bawana during the Games.
