Authorities have advised residents in the affected areas to “make judicious use of water” and prepare for possible low pressure or no water availability during the maintenance window. (File photo)The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has issued an alert regarding major water supply disruptions in several parts of New Delhi and South Delhi areas on May 31 due to planned maintenance and repair work. A 24-hour shutdown has been scheduled to facilitate critical upgrades and interconnections on key pipelines supplying water to the Capital, said officials.
According to a DJB statement released on Thursday, water supply will be suspended in areas including Majnu ka Tilla, Rajghat, Vidhan Sabha, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Hans Bhawan, CGO Complex, Nizamuddin, Defence Colony, South Extension and adjoining localities. The shutdown will begin at 5 pm on May 31 and continue for a full day.
“A shutdown for 24 hours has been approved by a competent authority in respect of the work of raising of 900 mm diameter Kilokari main pipeline blocking the flow of water of Drain No. 12 near Hans Bhawan ITO,” the DJB said in its statement. It added that this repair work would impact supply from a 40 million gallons per day (MGD) capacity Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, as the Kilokari water pipeline will remain non-operational during the period.
In South Delhi, additional disruptions will be experienced in localities under the Mehrauli water distribution system, including Mehrauli township, Begumpur, Kalu Sarai, Sarvodaya Enclave, Vijay Mandal DDA Flats, Azad Apartments, Adchini, and Katwaria Sarai Village, along with the Qutub Institutional Area.
The disruption in these areas is linked to the interconnection of a new 1,000 mm diameter Mehrauli water pipeline at four critical locations inside the Deer Park pumping station premises. This work will impact the water supply line emanating from Deer Park and feeding the Qutub Underground Reservoir (UGR), Mehrauli, and areas under the MNWS (Malviya Nagar Water Services) — a public-private partnership with Suez that began operations in 2013, manages water distribution in the area.
“The water supply…will not be available/ will be available at low pressure on May 31 (evening) and June 1 (morning),” the DJB added.
The DJB has provided dedicated helpline numbers for water tanker requests. Residents in Vasant Kunj can call 26137216, while the Central Control Room can be reached at 1916, 23527679, 23634469, and 9650291021. For residents in Malviya Nagar, the water services helpline is 8427312731 .
This announcement comes just a week after a similar 24-hour shutdown affected water supply across areas including Greater Kailash, Lok Nayak Hospital, Rajghat, and the Delhi Zoo on May 22, as the DJB carried out maintenance-related shutdowns.
Authorities have advised residents in the affected areas to “make judicious use of water” and prepare for possible low pressure or no water availability during the maintenance window.
