Theatre person Lilette Dubey is celebrating a special milestone — this year, she has completed 35 years on the stage. We have watched her transform into many different people: a queen,a sweeper,a comic character,a tragic figure. The 57 year old,who has directed well-known productions such as 30 days in September,Love on the Brink, and Dance like a Man,now introduces the Indian adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning comic play,August: Osage County. Dubey plays the drug addict matriarch of a family in Goa in this play, and is joined by daughter Ira Dubey, and names from cinema such as Sandhya Mridul,Suchitra Pillai,Kitu Gidwani and Darshan Jariwala.

Revolving around the “universal theme” of a dysfunctional family, the play explores the trying life and times of the Weston family, whose members have a penchant for driving each other crazy. Things, however, change when a crisis looms over them, and they must learn to sail together. “Since we have bought the rights of the play,I haven’t changed much. We’ve set the play in Goa,and this has enabled us to retain the Christian names,” said Dubey, adding that she had read this script a year ago and “fallen in love with it”. “Staging it was inevitable,” she says.

August: Osage County will be staged at Epicentre,Gurgaon,on October 17. Contact: 0124-2715000
