Accused in 1996 train blast poisoned in custody
The viscera report of Mohammed Shakeel, accused in the 1996 Frontier Mail bomb blast, says he was poisoned and did not commit suicide,as the jail superintendent had claimed. District Magistrate R Ramesh Kumar said the viscera report of Shakeel, found hanging from the ceiling of his cell in high-security Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad on June 19,2009,showed aluminum phosphite poisoning.
Dasna Jail superintendent V K Singh said the viscera report may show poisoning but the police found a suicide note from Shakeels barrack. His suicide note stated he had already served more than 10 years in prison but many witnesses were yet to be examined, Singh said. The note said he could not spend his life like that and was thus ending it.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had sent a notice to the district magistrate and the jail superintendent to submit the viscera report after Shakeels family filed a complaint accusing the police of killing him in jail.
Vidhi Vigyan Laboratory Tajganj in Agra has sent a report of the viscera sample.
