New Delhi: Holding the State government and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) “vicariously liable” for the death of four children after they drowned in a water-filled pit in March last year,the Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered the authorities to pay Rs 3.5 lakh to each of the victims’ families as compensation. A Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said that the ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 lakh,already given by the state government to the kin of the children,was not sufficient,and enhanced it by Rs 2.5 lakh. It,however,conceded to the government’s argument that the contractor concerned was duty-bound to maintain the area,and gave it the liberty to recover the sum from him following due legal process.

Court provides relief to cash-strapped prisoners

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has provided some relief to prisoners who have been granted bail,but are forced to languish in jail due to their inability to furnish the surety amount. The court,on Wednesday,gave the green signal to a slew of measures aimed at helping such prisoners walk out of jail after fulfilling minimal procedural requirements. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna gave the nod to a set of proposals mooted by the state government in consultation with the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in order to ensure there were no inordinate delays in freeing prisoners on bail.

Techie’s wife commits suicide in East Delhi

New Delhi: A 26-year-old woman from Assam allegedly committed suicide at her residence in East Delhi after a fight with her husband,police said on Wednesday. The incident was reported from Pandav Nagar on Tuesday night,and the victim has been identified as Sharmishta Kaushik. Though her husband,Rituraj Thakur,a software engineer by profession,rushed her to the hospital soon after he found her hanging,the doctors declared her brought dead. “We have also recovered her personal dairy,” a police officer said.
