If you were hot,you trended on Twitter; and if you trended,you were hot. 2011 was the year when 140 characters turned into popularity meters of people and movements.

Virtual Protest

Social networking sites didnt just start the fire this year,they also spread it far and wide. Venting anger or arranging a gathering,it was on Facebook,Myspace and such where people with furtive passions connected. Anna Hazares campaign was Liked by thousands on Facebook. Indias first Slutwalk,too,brought in supporters through Facebook. When Delhi student Umang Sabharwal announced that Slutwalk Arthaat Besharmi Morcha,the Indian version of a global movement,would be held in the Capital,it fast became a cause that some decried,and others celebrated.

Action Driven

Buttons became a thing of the past as a number of gamers resorted to dancing and kicking in front of their consoles. Finger-wrecking gamepads made way for motion-sensing. Following Nintendo Wiis hit formula,Sony launched PlayStation Move and Microsoft launched Xbox Kinect. While the PlayStation Move is a stick you wave at virtual foes,Xbox Kinect has a camera and sensors which literally look at your actions and reproduce them in-game.

Trending became a buzzword this year,indicating the most-discussed topics of the day or week on Twitter. Even before the world saw her face,the Bachchans Beti B was the talk of the microblogging site,and hence a trend. Sonam Kapoors acting and dressing talents were dissected by eager Twitterati,while the new youth anthem,Kolaveri Di,came in for fulsome praise. Legendary actors Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand began trending as an overwhelming number of fans paid their last respects on Twitter. And enough people retweeted #5ThingsThatAnnoyedMeThisYear and #ThingsYouShouldNOTDo to make these trending topics as 2011 came to a close.
