1984 anti-Sikh riots case: HC issues notices to Sajjan,CBI

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and the CBI to reply to a plea by the family of the victims challenging his acquittal in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and the CBI to reply to a plea by the family of the victims challenging his acquittal in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which five men were killed in Delhi Cantonment area.

The plea was filed by Jagdish Kaur and Nirpreet Kaur who had lost their family members in the riots following the assassination of

the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

A bench of justices G S Sistani and G P Mittal issued notices to CBI and Sajjan and fixed the matter for further hearing on August 27.

The same bench is also hearing two other pleas

filed by the victims families against the other five accused in the case.

The Sessions court of District Judge J R Aryan had on April 30 acquitted Sajjan of the charges of rioting,unlawful assembly and murder in the case.

Former MCD councillor Balwan Khokhar,retired Navy Captain Bhagmal and Girdharilal were awarded life term for murder,while former MLA and Mahender Yadav and Krishan Khokhar were convicted of rioting.

The two complainants have filed three petitions before the High court against Sajjans acquittal,the acquittal of Krishan Khokhar and Mahender Yadav of murder,and for awarding death penalty to the three other accused.

Calling the acquittal wholly erroneous and

beset with conjectures and surmises the plea asked

the court to set aside the

April 30 order.
