Shammi Kapoor returns to the big screen alongside great grandnephew Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar

Nobody can say “Yahoo” quite like Shammi Kapoor. And the leading ladies of yesteryear like Sharmila Tagore and Saira Banu will attest that few can match his madcap dance style. Now,the current Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor gets a chance to try to measure up to his great granduncle in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar.

The 78-year-old Shammi plays a cameo in the film, which stars Ranbir as a popular musician. His six-day shoot for Rockstar will take place in Delhi next week.

“I do not have the energy of the younger generation of stars but I will try my best to look good on screen,” says Shammi, from his Mumbai hospital where he is undergoing dialysis treatment.

This is also the reason Kapoor has been away from the screen for a decade, his last outing being Kareeb in 1999. “I have to visit the hospital thrice a week for treatment, which takes up to six hours. But Imtiaz has assured me that he will make arrangements for me in a hospital so that I don’t have to skip my treatment schedule,” says Kapoor.

It was on Ali’s persistence that Kapoor agreed to the film. “I consider him to be a fine director and have seen his work in Love Aaj Kal. But after Ranbir joined him to pressure me,I had to agree,” adds Shammi, his voice softening as he continues how Ranbir was “a naughty kid who would come over to my house and shout into my ear to irritate me. Now,he has evolved into a versatile actor. I loved him in Wake Up Sid.” Ask him about his role in Rockstar, and he turns cagey. “Can’t disclose anything right now,” he says with a chuckle. We are waiting.
