Baghi Samrat,a play, aims to integrate education with theatre

To involve more people in the process of imparting education to under-privileged children and bringing them in to the mainstream,Literacy India,an NGO dedicated to empowerment through education,is here in Chandigarh with Baghi Samrat,a play based on the Persian original Sohrab Rustam. “Theatre is one of our mainstays of development. Children take these performances all over India, and in the process, develop confidence and a positive attitude,” smiles Jaspreet Pannu, executive director of the NGO.

Theatre and television personality Vardhan Chaturvedi,an NSD pass-out and anchor of the popular television show Sansani has directed the play, which involves kids between six and 18 years. “The idea is to integrate theatre with education and make it part of everyday learning,” he says. There is of course, tremendous ground work and nurturing to be done in the process, but the Chaturvedi says theatre has helped these children express their emotions constructively.

The adaptation by Nikhil Raj,set in UP and Bihar, will be staged today at Bal Bhawan. The otherwise serious play, which deals with crime, poverty, terrorism, the Naxal movement, has a comic element to appeal to children. “Entertainment and education have to go hand-in-hand. We have also bought the complexities of a film set on stage,” says Vardhan, introducing the cast of the play, many of whom have earlier worked in films and television.
