With the 2026 Mohali Municipal Corporation elections approaching, administrative and political activity in the city has gained momentum. According to sources, the long-pending proposal to expand the civic body’s jurisdiction is finally moving forward. The boundary extension process is said to be in its final stage, and the Local Government Department is likely to give its final approval within the next two weeks.
Senior officials in the Local Government Department confirmed that Mohali’s rapidly growing urban growth has made it necessary to redefine the municipal limits. The boundary revision aims to include adjoining areas that have developed significantly in recent years, ensuring that residents there receive proper civic amenities and urban infrastructure.
Back in early 2022, when the Congress was in power at the MC Mohali, a proposal to expand Mohali’s municipal limits was approved and sent to the Local Government Department. However, no action was taken. Social activist Ram Kumar later approached the court, following which the government filed an affidavit promising a decision within six months, a deadline that lapsed in May. Interestingly, the contempt petition filed by Ram Kumar in this very matter was also heard on Wednesday, with the next hearing scheduled for November 2.
Proposed areas to be added
According to the original expansion proposal, areas such as Balongi, Badmajra, Ballo Majra TDI, Sectors 90-91, and Sector 82, among others, were recommended for inclusion within the municipal boundary. Notably, Balongi alone has over 10,000 voters and a population exceeding 50,000. Several of these areas are already well-developed with residential and commercial establishments.
Residents of peripheral localities like Kharar Road, Landran, and Airport Road have long demanded inclusion within the MC, citing the lack of basic amenities such as proper roads, sewerage systems, and street lighting. Once incorporated, these areas could finally receive the civic services they have been seeking for years.
MLA Kulwant Singh supports inclusion
When contacted, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh said he fully supports the move to expand the municipal boundary. “Developed areas that have been functioning like part of the city for years deserve to be officially included in the Corporation. Residents there have every right to elect their own representative,” he said.
He added that many well-developed zones remain outside the existing municipal limits and should be brought under the civic body’s jurisdiction to ensure balanced growth and better governance. He also confirmed that the file is moving sharply.
Final decision pending with Local Government Department
The Municipal Corporation sources revealed that the Local Government Department recently sent back the file for minor revisions, which the Corporation has now completed and re-submitted the final proposal. The final decision now rests with senior officials and the Local Government Minister.
The Mohali Municipal Corporation elections are likely to be held in Feb-March 2026. With boundary expansion set to alter both the city’s geography and its voter base, these elections are expected to be significant not just politically but also administratively, potentially shaping Mohali’s development trajectory for the coming years.
