When Silence Speaks

Often the voices that are heard in silence are the loudest. Such moments have been expressed in a unique manner by two young artists from Chandigarh — Seema Sidhu and Anubhav Som,in an exhibition titled “Momentary Voice of Silence”.

Often the voices that are heard in silence are the loudest. Such moments have been expressed in a unique manner by two young artists from Chandigarh — Seema Sidhu and Anubhav Som,in an exhibition titled “Momentary Voice of Silence”. Sidhu, who has confessed to spending many years listening to the conversations of fellow passengers during her innumerable train journeys, has translated them on unconventional mediums such as benches and trunks, and of course,on canvases. Her works are a silent commentary on those unguarded moments. On the other hand,Som,who has won the 2010 State Academy Award, the AIFACS Award 2010 and the 2011 Garhi Scholarship, has always been sensitive to the voice of nature and to man’s turbulent desires.

In one of his works,a tree stands laden with all that is materialistic and noisy, set against the vast expanse of nature. Often,he places a sculpted ladder as a metaphor for man’s constant quest, that keeps him vacillating between the material and the spiritual world.

The exhibition is on till October 8 at Gallery 1,Lalit Kala Akademi,New Delhi
