Vox Populi

How will security gates help?

Though work on installing security gates in several sectors is in progress of Chandigarh, the Municipal Corporation is not ensuring that all entry and exit points are plugged to check the movement of criminal elements — defeating the very purpose for which these had been planned. These open areas help people move in or out of the sectors even when the gates are locked. This is shocking. How did the Chandigarh Administration approve the decision of installing such gates? The project will only waste public money. The work to set up these gates should be immediately stalled. I cannot understand that based on what term and conditions had the Administration approved such a project. What will be the use of the security gates to those who are residing on the V-4 roads? Manimajra is a perfect example, where gates are not solving any purpose. Most residents are of the view that a committee should be set up by the Chandigarh Administration — comprising the area councilor as its chairperson — and detailed inquiry should be conducted in in such ares. The opinion of the residents should be taken in account — whether they are ready to contribute for the salary of the security guard. Strategies should be chalked out regarding the time periods when the gates will be kept open or closed. After the report is submitted,a decision should be taken regarding the installation of the security gates.

Pay attention to needs of the disabled

Flyovers or overbridges on busy roads alone cannot make Chandigarh a pedestrian-friendly city. The Administration talks with pride of Le Corbuisers’ legacy. I would like to ask the Administration — why is Chandigarh — known for having a spacious environ and pedestrian-friendly roads — is inattentive to the basic need of physically-challenged persons who find it hard to visit public parks due to improper infrastructure? The revolving gates installed at most city parks and other spaces in the green belt keep the disabled at bay. These entrances convert the leisurely open spaces into fortresses, which aim to keep vehicles, animals and wheelchairs out. Keeping this in mind,do you think it is right to call Chandigarh a pedestrian-friendly city? Secondly,in 2006-07,MP Pawan Kumar Bansal had sanctioned Rs 17 lakh from his MPLAD fund for pedestrian track paths near V-5 roads, following demands by senior citizens. Till date, the fund is lying unutilised due to the indecisive and indifferent attitude of the Municipal Corporation. Tackling traffic in “City Beautiful” is also difficult these days. The Chandigarh Administration or the Municipal Corporation should take initiative and declare one day a week as a “padyatra day”. On such a day,no official vehicles will be allowed to ply. The Administration needs to encourage the people to use public transport. If the government can make buses a more popular mode of transport, then the amount of carbon dioxide produced can be reduced.

UT Adviser must protect city’s heritage

The new UT Adviser should definitely focus on guarding the city’s heritage by repairing and restoring tapestries made by Le Corbusier. Other things also needs to be on his agenda. The city’’s security apparatus needs to be strengthened. With a constant rise in cases of kidnappings, armed robberies and thefts in tricity,it is natural for the residents to feel unsafe. So,a lot needs to be done in order to curb this menace. Making the city cleaner, greener and pollution free should be next on the agenda. Steps must be taken to promote health schemes for senior citizens and women. Other areas that need to focus are sanitation, education for underprivileged children, health facilities for the poor and better infrastructure for villages on the city periphery. He must steer clear of politics and look at how to complete development projects and what new projects should be taken up. He should ensure transparency and coordination at all levels and monitor the progress of projects. Last but not the least,he should also understand the needs of local residents to ensure development of the city.

Why did Ashok Bassi return to Congress?

The news item that Shri Ashok Bassi has quit the BJP to rejoin the Congress was quite baffling. If Bassi was feeling suffocated in the BJP,he could have made his own political outfit or joined any other party. Why did he return to the Congress, when the party’s leaders are allegedly involved in so many scams? Even Chandigarh Congress leaders, following the footsteps of their national leaders, have been involved in a number of scams. So,will Bassi be comfortable in the corruption-ridden environment of the Chandigarh Congress or was he missing the corrupt environment of the Congress?
