13 laptops ,40 mobiles,stereo set and bike recovered
The police arrested two students who had been involved in various incidents of thefts by breaking windowpanes of cars parked in various parking lots across the city.
The accused have been identified as Ranjit Singh (21),a resident of Bharth village,Batala and Amrit Pal (20),a resident of Longowal in Sangrur district.
The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police had launched a special drive after receiving information regarding a gang involved in thefts using a Bullet motorcycle bearing a fake registration number. The two were apprehended by a special team of the police on October 31 and 13 laptops,40 mobile phones and a stolen bike have been recovered till now.
While Ranjit is a engineering student in Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology,Amrit Pal was preparing for his twelfth standard examinations. Ranjit stayed at the college hostel and often travelled to Chandigarh with the other accused.
While in the city,the two targeted cars parked in the various parking lots across the city. They stole laptops,stereos and other expensive items after cutting glasses of cars with a cutter.
Speaking to Newsline,Inspector Amanjot said,The two had been active in the area for the past one year. Ranjit,who had taken a hostel room in his college had also rented a room in Baltana without the knowledge of his parents. The two used the stolen bike to travel to Chandigarh from Sangrur and often changed the registration number of the bike.
Singh added that the the duo stole articles after cutting the windowpane of cars with a glass cutter. Thereafter they use to strike the window pane with a screw driver.
The police expect to make more recoveries from the two and have taken Amrit Pal in police custody till Thursday. Ranjit was sent to judicial custody on November 5.
With the arrest of the duo,Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police claim to have solved 10 cases out of which seven cases are of laptop theft,one each of stolen motorcycle,camera and stereo theft.
