The day after: V-C cancels all guest faculty appointments

VC Prof R C Sobti said only regular appointments will be made in the department for which a committee has been constituted.

In response to the complaints and allegations made by members of the Administrative and Academic Committee of Panjab University’s Department of Evening Studies, the Vice Chancellor Prof R C Sobti today cancelled all the guest faculty appointments of the department. He further announced that only regular appointments will be made in the department for which a committee has been constituted.

During a meeting called by the Vice Chancellor of all the department teachers,he also asked for a fresh list of faculty requirement along with a detailed list of work load of each existing faculty member. For the appointments, the University will release an advertisement soon. The department has 46 posts out of which only 28 are filled by the regular faculty members.

In a department meeting for the approval of 23 guest faculty members appointed by the department last week, the committee members alleged that a majority of these were relatives of existing teachers. They also objected to the number of teachers appointed on guest faculty basis for certain subjects. The members pointed out that in some courses like the Masters in Public Administration and Police Administration, the number of faculty appointments was equal to the number of students enrolled.

The department has been in the dock for various reasons with even students having accused teachers of hardly taking classes that results in the failure of achieving the minimum requirement of lectures. Due to this, the examination branch refuses to release roll numbers.

RTI activist now seeks information from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Unhappy with Panjab University’s justification for missing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s name in the list of Doctorate Degrees awarded,RTI activist Rajinder Singla today wrote a letter to the Prime Minister seeking the same information from him.

The activist also said the suspension of the Senior Assistant of the R&S Branch of the University,Satish Kumar was an example of how guilty officers managed to escape in the University. He demanded action against the Deputy Registrar (RTI)-cum-PIO (who is directly accountable under the RTI Act) for providing wrong information and the Superintendent who has attested the wrong information on the list of people who have been awarded the Doctor of Laws ( honoris causa ) by the University.
