He’s got a licence to thrill…India’s first military action thriller writer,Mukul Deva is back with a bang with Blowback, the third in the four-part series on global terrorism, after the best-selling Lashkar and Salim Must Die. Mukul was here at the Capitol Book Depot to promote Blowback, and was in conversation with Neelam Man Singh, with Vijai Vardhan reading excerpts from the book.

A former Indian Army officer and security consultant,Mukul’s been there and done that, with an eventful Army tenure, which included a decade of operational service, one that gave him a close insight and experience to write on a subject as tough and sensitive as terrorism. “It all began with the Sarojini Nagar blasts,it was so frustrating to see what was happening. People had a hazy view of it,and I wanted them to know the reality and how important it is to defend our security and demand it as a right,’’ says Mukul, who decided to write a series of novels on the subject to deal with it with more clarity and depth. As for turning to fiction to uncover it all,Mukul feels it gives him more liberty and a licence to hunt when he calls it fictional and also gets it easier to get the story across. “A good story has to be backed by reality, true incidents, and a clear perspective, which I ensure. I have been to all the places I write about, and have physically ensured the facts, with half of my life spent researching and then writing,’’ he adds. The writer agrees military action is a tough genre, for it’s sensitive, but he’s fallen in love with the dark side of human nature and after this series,he plans to do a crime series on the seven deadly sins. “What’s vital is realism in this genre and that’s what I always strive to achieve,’’ Mukul says Blowback is all about the unfortunate and unintended events of military action and the need of the hour, especially in India is to fight terrorism with correct ammunition and manpower. “Blowback is bound to engross and thrill you,buy it,’’ smiles Mukul.

The novel has been published by Harper Collins and priced at Rs 199.
