Techie held for torturing wife,demanding dowry

Chandigarh Police on Thursday arrested a software professional for having unnatural sex with his wife,demanding dowry and forcing his wife to take abortion pills. They have also slapped a case against his parents and siblings. Police arrested and later got day-long custody of Anil Channa,a resident of Sector 48 A. His wife,an M Phil,is a college lecturer.

The case under Sections 498 Indian Penal Code for demand of dowry,377 Indian Penal Code for having unnatural sex,and 313 of IPC for causing miscarriage was registered at Sector 14 police station on Thursday. The accused was produced before the local magistrate who remanded him to a day’s police custody for recovery of dowry items from his possession. According to the police,the girl’s family said they had given silver and gold jewellery and cash upto Rs 4 lakh during their daughter’s wedding in January this year.

However,she was constantly harassed for more dowry and subjected to cruelty due to which she came to live with her parents,police said.

The girl has been living with her parents for the past five months,the police said. Her father retired recently from the Haryana State Agriculture Marketing Board (HSAMB).

Channa,a software professional had recently quit his job from a company in Mohali. Police raided Channa’s residence on Thursday,but his parents and brother and sister have gone into hiding. However,all of them today filed an application seeking anticipatory bail before the local court. The case has been listed for hearing on Friday.
