Students get their act together to make Vimarsh 2010 a success

Young and energetic, students are the driving force behind the First International Student Academic Convention: Vimarsh-2010,held on February 23 at the Panjab University. The theme for the convention this year was Higher Education in the Era of Globalization.

Most students associated with Vimarsh are involved in various activities apart from their studies. While some run their own NGOs,others work in similar organisations. Many are involved in sporting activities.

Rohit Sachdeva,a first year student at the School of Communication Studies, has entered the Limca Book of Records for being continuously on air for 105 hours as a radio jockey. Saroj Thakur, meanwhile, runs her own NGO Nischaye while simultaneously doing her MBA. “These activities are very important for the overall development of students. Studies alone are not enough if one wants to survive in today’s rat race,” says Bhavana Kumar,an MBA student who has been imparting yoga lessons for the last nine years.

“The inspiration behind this conference is to generate ideas for improving the education system and make academics and businessmen aware of the system,” say team members.

The driving force behind events like Vimarsh is the students’ zeal to work as a team, without grudging the extra work. The study schedule is hectic, and sparing 3-4 hours daily to prepare for the event is no easy task. “We want to share our hopes and expectations from the education system and this motivates us to work hard,” says Jiwateshwar,an MBA student.

The students feel that while an increasing number of their peers are enrolling in universities, the staff strength is not adequate, given the trend of opting for lucrative corporate jobs rather than teaching ones. “Given a chance we will like to teach. Teaching is a noble profession. Post Sixth Pay Commission, the pay package too has become enviable,” says Navneet Sandhu,an MBA student heading the Gidda team of the University. Thumbs up to that.
