‘Substandard’ work criticised

Municipal councillors discussed the substandard execution of works.

Municipal councillors discussed the substandard execution of works. A question was raised by councillor Harjinder Kaur pertaining to the quality control measures adopted by the MC for various work.

In their reply, officials said inspection and testing of machinery was done before installation. After receipt of the material at the site,it is installed as per specifications. Harjinder said while the measures looked good on paper,it did not seem to be followed. “There have been instances when officials retired long ago had to be called to ask where the pipelines were laid. The multiplay equipment installed in some parks broke after a few days. Day-to-day quality control is required,” she said.

The quality of roads being laid was questioned. Councillor Pallav Mukherjee said there was no supervision when work was executed. Councillor Pardeep Chhabra said defects were already visible in the work being executed in Sector 17.

The House witnessed a heated discussion on hiring of security guards for greenbelts. J S Kang said gardeners should be hired first for upkeep of the greenbelts. This led to all councillors expressing different views on the issue. A proposal to hire staff to carry out the work, instead of contracting services, was however turned down.
