Split Wide Open

“We are quite an angry lot,” says Melroy, rhythm guitarist for Mumbai-based rock outfit Split.

Mumbai-based rock band Split visits the city as part of Harley-Davidson’s Harley Rock Riders

“We are quite an angry lot,” says Melroy, rhythm guitarist for Mumbai-based rock outfit Split. In town as part of the five city Harley-Davidson’s Harley Rock Riders tour and a gig at Score Sports bar in Sector 8,the rock band consists of a “bunch of good friends,a quintet of drinking buddies and musicians who know how to floor a tune”.

Formed in 2001,Split,says Melroy, has settled on the perfect formula for chaos. With Garreth on vocals,Mel and Aviv on guitars,Shekhar on bass and Nigel on drums,Split’s music is all about the freedom of expression. “While our musical inspiration comes from post grunge, groups like Nirvana and Pearl Jam,our lyrical trigger is India and the eccentricities, problems, conflicts and changes people are living,” says Mel. So their songs comment on roads in Mumbai,on violence and religion,on conflict and resolution,on psychological trauma,on personal angst and now the Commonwealth Games.

The band has played in festivals like Independence Rock & GIR (Mumbai and Delhi),Eastwind and June Rock Out.They have also been featured on GIR’s Volume X and twice on India’s premier Indie Unmetal compilation Stupiditties. This is how their website,splitsplit.org,describes their sound — “Sounds like ramshackle blues meets rum-soaked rock ‘n roll and looks like a spiritual revival meeting gone wrong.” “Thanks to social networks, people have become their own media stations. All Split members want to do is be heard and keep playing. We don’t care about piracy, all we want is people to hear our music . relate to it and connect with it,” Mel signs off.
