Delhi-based designer Mandira Wirk is excited about her solo couture show rolling out next month. “I showcased at the recent Lakme Fashion Week but it’s been three or four years since I did a solo show. I will be presenting my Indian couture line,” says Wirk,in Chandigarh as part of the sixth edition of Blenders Pride Fashion Tour.

Wirk, who hails from Jalandhar, was eager to showcase her work to a home crowd. “I have so many relatives coming for the show. Chandigarh is always a fun venue,” she says, adding that her collection is inspired by Jean Luc-Godard’s Breathless. Evoking the French look of the 1960s,Wirk’s collection accentuates fluidity, cascading folds, scuba style tops enunciated by masculine elements like tailored jackets, jumpsuits and exaggerated shoulder elements.

Wirk is always bombarded by queries regarding her plans to retail out of Chandigarh. “I am still confused whether I should go ahead or not,” she says, well aware that most shoppers in Chandigarh head to Delhi for designer deals. “My store sees a lot of clientele from Punjab and wonder whether coming closer would be a better idea,” she says.

Wirk has her hands full with Bollywood. “I do celebrity styling but I am finally designing for movies,” she says. “I am dressing up Minnisha Lamba for her next movie. The character is that of an innocent girl and I have designed keeping that in mind,” she says. Wirk has also styled Sonam Kapoor for the promotional tour of Aisha and her celebrity clients include actor Priyanka Chopra.

The designer is also involved in creating awareness about the Indian tiger. “As people who have access to a large public platform,I feel it’s important we do our bit, especially for a social cause,” says Wirk who has designed Save the Tiger tags to go with all her outfits. “My store constantly runs a documentary on Save the Tiger campaign,” she adds. She has also joined hands with Ishwar,an NGO that sponsors artificial limbs. “I am looking to roll out a charity show for them. Chandigarh would be an ideal venue,” she says. We agree too.
