Satinder Sartaaj to sing for breast cancer awareness today

Punjabi singer Satinder Sartaaj will perform in the city on October 17 to create awareness on breast cancer.

Punjabi singer Satinder Sartaaj will perform in the city on October 17 to create awareness on breast cancer. Organised by the Rani Breast Cancer Trust,‘Mehfil-e-Sartaaj’ is about stressing on ‘early detection and protection’ against breast cancer among women.

Earlier this year,Sartaaj had collaborated with cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s NGO YouweCan,which generates awareness and facilitates early detection of cancer across India.

Acting on social consciousness,Sartaaj decided to use his music to generate funds for YouweCan through concerts. He simultaneously reflected the same in his album,Afsaaney Sartaaj De.

By raising funds through another concert,he also helped start a library and an education programme for children in Rauni village near Khanna in 2009.

Sartaaj feels art and awareness go hand in hand. “Music is therapeutic in many ways and if I get to sing for a cause, then I am game for it anytime and anywhere,” said the singer who is also fondly called ‘pardesan da fankaar’.

The Trust had earlier got singers like Harbhajan Mann,Rekha Bhardwaj and Gurdas Maan to sing for a cause.

“All it takes is five minutes in a month to do a quick personal check up for any lump or growth. Women need to do this for early detection of breast cancer,” said Bittu Sandhu, founder of the Trust and organiser of the concert.

“I never thought Punjab would have a train called Cancer Express running through the state. We are here to help women with tests and detection,” added Sandhu.

“It is important people know there are organisations there to help them. For instance,in Shimla if a woman is detected with cancer, people don’t marry their sons in that family for fear of contracting the disease. There is a pressing need to eradicate myths and create more awareness on this,” said Sandhu adding that while the Haryana government was eager to participate and help in the cause, the Punjab government did not seem to find the issue important enough.

“Our waters are polluted and we will soon be a cancer capital. Look at the affected Bathinda belt. This is a big problem and it needs to be addressed,” said Sandhu.

The concert will be held at Tagore Theatre from 6.30 pm on Thursday. Entry for the event is by pass or invite only.
