To avoid being shifted to Model Jail,Burail,Chandigarh,a Sangrur Jail under trial asked his friend to write a false statement mentioning that he (the under trial) had been chosen by a terrorist outfit for eliminating the Dera Sacha Sauda chief.
Rubbishing the letter,an inquiry held by the Chandigarh Police held that the letter was false and manipulated.
Sandeep Khurmi,who is accused of about a dozen cases of robbery,snatching,attempt to murder and murder was released on bail from Burail Jail on April 1.
One of the sources in the Burail Jail said,The accused was transferred to Burail Jail from Sangrur Jail on June 24,last year.
A routine checking after he was lodged here was conducted and this letter was recovered following which an inquiry was initiated, the source further added.
Sources said that the letter stated that a terrorist outfit,Babbar Khalsa International (BKI),had chosen Khurmi as the chief for an operation to eliminate the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. A list of arms and ammunition and other requirements for the operation was also mentioned in the letter.
Sources in the Model Jail said that the accused remained in the jail from last June to April. The inquiry was conducted by the Operations Cell. \
According to the UT Police officials,the intelligence wing of the Punjab police and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had conducted independent inquiries for the same which revealed the same thing.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Operations,Jagbir Singh said,The inquiry did not reveal anything following which a legal action could have been taken. The accused had manipulated this letter just to avoid being shifted from Sangrur Jail to Burail Jail.
According to the inquiry report submitted by the UT Police Operations Cell,Sandeep Khurmi,a resident of Palsora,was arrested by the Mohali police for murder of Baba Hari Charan Vashishath.
Khurmi was repeatedly shifted in various jails during his custody,reads the inquiry report.
After the letter was recovered by the jail authorities at Burail,the UT Police had written to the Punjab Police DGP (prisons),to get the handwriting samples of Khurmi from all the jails where he had been lodged. However,the superintendent of District Jail,Sangrur,wrote back saying that they did not have any handwriting sample of the accused.
During interrogation by the Operations Cell,Khurmi revealed that he had made a friend,Jaspreet Singh alias Jassa,write the letter for him. Jassa who was facing a murder trial was lodged in the same barrack as Khurmi in Sangrur Jail.
The copy of the handwriting of Jassa was obtained from Superintendent,District Jail,Sangrur through the fax seems to be matching with the said alleged letter. From the inquiry and documents,it is crystal clear that the accused Sandeep had manipulated this letter intentionally to avoid his shifting to Burail jail, reads a copy of the inquiry report submitted on July 19,last year.
The letter further reads,The contents of the alleged letter are false and manipulated. Hence,no legal action is required.
