At the epoch of recession, homemakers make their presence felt
Tough times call for tough measures, they say. A fact that couldnt be more appropriate than in the times of recession, when homemakers don more than one role with perfection. Managing the house for what seems like forever, these women now bring in economic support aswell.
Seema Grover of Sector 15,whose husband lost his job with a MNC last month, has emerged as the sole bread earner. With the support of my family I started the tiffin business. My children are small and need my attention and so this emerged as an obvious choice, she tells,as a proud husband Nalin nods in agreement. Right now my wife is the financial support system of our family. I am really proud that she is taking care of the family. This, she is doing in addition to her other responsibilities and without a frown. If Im unable to find a job, then I will invest in this business and I will seek a job from my wife, he smiles.
As for boutique owner Mamta Bahl of Sector 16,this is one time when she could make a mark in the male dominated society. Tradition has kept women in almost overwhelming oppression. But together, across the country women are changing their destiny with the little more than a vision and with the bare hands, says Mamta, who discovered her interest in fashion during college days, but gave it up after marriage. My family and child became my sole focus. But then over time I realised the need to be financially independent and so decided to open up a boutique. Its tough to balance home and business, but now its this very decision that is helping me contribute to my family in a big way and also is providing employment to a few people in a time when companies are busy with lay-outs, Bahl adds.
Neelam Sharma of Sector 15,who takes home tuitions, too believes that work has brought about a big change. I used to teach in a private school, but I left the job because my son was preparing for entrance exams and he needed my time, attention and care. However, when everyone left for work,I felt bored and I thought of giving tuitions, she says, adding that now the added income is acting as a support for her husband and family. The fear factor is there, but we know that if worst comes to worst,my income will be enough to keep us going while he searches for something new. Even the small chunk of income gives me confidence from within, she sums up. Kudos ladies!
