A product of the National School of Drama,Pandit had earlier played the role of Narayan in Loknayak,Prakash Jha’s docu-drama produced by Prasar Bharti in 2003-04. So,does such idealism exist; if yes,how does it survive? “Today,such leaders are hard to come by in our commercialised,superficial world,” Pandit says.

In spite of his penchant for portraying politicians in films,Pandit prefers to steer of politics. “I am an artist first,” he says. What scares him is the idea of getting stereotyped in Bollywood. “I had been playing elderly characters in movies and advrtisements,and carrying them off well. People started thinking I am an aged guy,” he says,citing the elderly roles he played in movies like Bas Ek Pal,Risk,A Wednesday,Jail,Gangajal and Apaharan.

Currently working in an Ekta Kapoor serial on Star Plus,Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajna,Pandit chooses his roles with care. “My characters have always been different — from a sensitive Chief Minister to a manipulative sharp politician to a smooth operator,a corrupt police inspector and then again,a good one”. A trained singer,writer,composer and theatre artist,Pandit will be returning to theatre after nine years in a play directed by Nadira Babbar. “We’ve been busy rehearsing for that,” he signs off.
