With the process of fixing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on old vehicles also having started, the Registering and Licencing Authority has sought space for the purpose. RLA has asked for place to be allocated in either a parking lot or the circus ground in Sector 17 and the exhibition ground in Sector 34 where the vendor could be deployed.
HSRP is at present affixed at three locations. These include the RLA offices in Sectors 17,42 and Industrial Area. At Sector 17 and Industrial Area, the space for parking of vehicles for fixing plates is quite less. Since now, apart from the new vehicles the old ones would also have to be accommodated, the space is not sufficient. For the commercial vehicles, the number plates are affixed at the office of State Transport Authority in Sector 18.
There are around eight lakh vehicles for which the high security number plates would have to be affixed. At present,250 to 280 vehicles are being accommodated every day at three centres. RLA is giving a time of one month for numbers of a particular old series to be fixed. With each series having 10000 numbers,at the current rate it would be difficult to complete the process. The deadline for changing the number plates on all vehicles is 2015.
An official of RLA said that they have sought permission for allowing vendors to be present at Sector 34,in the circus ground or the parking lot in front of RLA. These places have open spaces where more vehicles could be accommodated. He further said that the vendor would then be asked to increase the number of people deployed.
Chandigarh was among the first cities to introduce HSRP. However, after a Supreme Court rap over proper procedure not being followed, the process was scrapped and then started all over again.
