PU cancels interviews for key posts

The Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University,R C Sobti,has cancelled the interviews for the key administrative posts in the university that was scheduled for May 26 and 27.

The Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University,R C Sobti,has cancelled the interviews for the key administrative posts in the university that was scheduled for May 26 and 27.

This after there were series of protests and complaints against the key appointments in the university — Registrar,Controller of Examinations,Dean College Development Council,Associate Dean,College Development Council and Director Public Relations. While allegations were levelled against the V-C that he wants to appoint his “favourites”,another sets of complaints highlighted flouting of University Grants Commission norms in the appointment process.

In a press statement issued by the V-C,he stated: “The interviews for the posts have now been deferred until further notice. The Panjab University Syndicate will take a call on the matter in its forthcoming meeting on May 29.”

Also,the Syndicate meeting scheduled to take place at Dalhousie on May 29 will not be held there. It is most likely to be held inside the university. The change of the venue,sources said,was done in order to prevent any further set of fresh allegations.

Earlier also,such a meeting of the university,which was scheduled to be held at Shimla,was cancelled by the after there were allegations of wrongdoings in some newspaper reports.

Dr A S Bedi,a Senator and syndic of the university,reportedly complained on May 12 to the Chancellor of the university that the corrigendum was not released for all the four posts. This left the V-C with no option but to hold a special emergency meeting of the Syndicate on May 17. He again complained to the V-C about the same.

After these complaints,RTI activist Rajinder K Singla wrote to the Chancellor against the appointments of these key administrative posts.

Interviews for all these posts had earlier been held on August 25,2010 but none was found to be suitable. The vacancies were advertised again in April 15 this year. It was further alleged that the advertisement contained qualifications and experience designed in accordance with the academic qualifications/experience of candidates intended to be appointed by some selected candidates.
