NSUI creates history,sweeps PU polls

The Panjab University Student Council elections on Wednesday threw a split verdict with NSUI-HIMSU alliance emerging victorious by clinching the two main positions of the Student Council

The Panjab University Student Council elections on Wednesday threw a split verdict with NSUI-HIMSU alliance emerging victorious by clinching the two main positions of the Student Council — president and joint secretary. The other two posts of vice president and general secretary were won by the PUSU-INSO-ABVP-NSO alliance.

NSUI-HIMSU candidate,Chandan Rana from the Department of Biophysics, won with a substantially high margin of 838 votes to get elected as president of the Student Council. Rana who has been active in the university’s student council for the last six years, was earlier a member of SOPU and joined NSUI in January this year. The margin of victory is much higher this time. Last year SOPU’s Satinder Singh Satti won as president with a margin of 533 votes.

Another victorious NSUI-HIMSU candidate is Sunny Mehta, from the Department of Social Work, who emerged victorious as Joint Secretary, with a margin of 50 votes.

For the first time two women candidates have been elected. While Abha Sharma from Centre of Public Health, is general secretary,Disha Arora from Department of English is the new vice president. Both candidates belong to the PUSU-ABVP-INSO-NSO alliance. Abha is the second woman to be elected general secretary after Deepika Thakur, who won in 2009. While Disha won with a margin of 385 votes,Abha’s victory margin was 166.

Since direct elections started in the university,SOPU and PUSU with their alliances, have been the favourites in student council elections and this is the first time that NSUI has emerged as a major party.

While, the party has been contesting PU polls long,it emerged stronger after many prominent leaders of other parties, including SOPU and PUSU,decided to join NSUI this year.

Support of seasoned leaders, shrewd strategy and timely alliance are other reasons for NSUI’s phenomenal victory. It’s national presence was another factor which worked in its favour this year.

Rana said,“This is just the beginning,as the party will continue to win in the coming years too. We will work towards bringing down the fee of various self-financed courses. Upgrade of college infrastructure will be our top priority.”

Meanwhile,in the colleges NSUI failed to continue its victory trend, with SOPU emerging as the leading party in most of the city colleges.
