Need centralised data on missing children: Police

The senior police officers from the region have suggested having centralised data about missing children so as to track them as early as possible.

“It is important that we should have central data about the missing children so that every state is aware about them. This will help the police of the respective states to have sufficient information about the missing children,” said Nirmal Choudhary,IG Bureau of Police Research and Development(BPRD) of Union Home Ministry during a workshop on ‘advisory on missing children’. The workshop was held on Friday at Central Detective Training School in Chandigarh and it was organized by BPRD of Union Home Ministry. Senior police officers from Haryana,Punjab,Himachal,Jammu and Kashmir,Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Delhi attended the workshop.

The IGP,CID Shimla,Prithvi Raj suggested of having central data regarding missing children available with the police.

“The data needs to be updated on daily basis. But it should authenticated first,” Raj said,adding that their was a need for setting up an Anti-Human Trafficking Unit at a national level.

The DIG,Crime,Punjab,Sashi Parbha suggested that a software should be developed at national level in which data from all the states regarding missing children must be compiled on daily basis.

“We must have a system by which we can have access all the data at one point,” Parbha said.

The IGP,crime Haryana,Alok Kumar suggested that there should be a centralised format and check list about the missing children and the guidelines by the Supreme Court should be circulated to all the States.

“An effort should be done at state level to send the data regarding missing and reported back children to NCRB or a central agency so that at any point we can a true picture on the subject,” Kumar said.

SP crime,Jammu and Kahsmir,Ranjit Singh Sambyal suggested of setting up Anti-Missing Children Enforcement at national level to look after all the matters regarding missing children.

“A link system should also be developed amongst the States to share information regarding missing children which could be helpful in tracing them,” Sambyal said.

IGP Chaudhary,who chaired the workshop,said that the government of India was deeply concerned about the situation of missing children.

“The ministry of Home Affairs is particularly concerned about the physical security and safety of children. To understand the problem at the gross root level we are holding workshops where the officers tell us what needs to be done about the handling of cases of missing children,” Chaudhary said. “We need to ponder on and find out the possible new means which can be helpful in curbing the incidents of missing children in the light of emerging new challenges from the organised gangs involved in this type of crime.”
