NCC share in Armed Forces up 30 pc

The last year year has seen a steep rise in the number of NCC cadets from the northern region joining the Armed Forces.

The last year year has seen a steep rise in the number of NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets from the northern region joining the Armed Forces. The induction of cadets under the NCC Directorate of Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh has risen by around 30 per cent in this period.

The directorate has around 1.12 lakh cadets — male and female — enrolled in various schools and colleges of the three states and Chandigarh UT. While in the year 2008,a total of 74 cadets joined the forces, the figure increased to 94 in the current year.

Confirming the figures,Brigadier Rajendra Singh,Deputy Director General,NCC Directorate (Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh),said,“One of the aims of the NCC is to provide suitable environment to motivate the youth to take up a career in the Armed Forces. We expect the numbers to go up further. One of the reasons for this increase can be the revised salary structure of the Armed Forces under the Sixth Pay Commission.”

It must be be noted that there was no increase in the induction when the years 2007 and 2008 are compared. The total induction number was 75 in 2007,which remained at 74 in the year 2008. The figure includes the induction from the four Sainik Schools (Kunjpura,Kapurthala,Chail and Tira) under the directorate, and eight groups constituted across the region. While the number of inductions from the Sainik Schools remained constant,it has increased from the eight groups over the previous year. From 25,the number increased to 47 this year.

The NCC in this directorate comprises 38 boys’ battalions, nine girls’ battalions, two remount and veterinary squadrons, five naval units and eight air squadrons, covering 49 districts. NCC units under the directorate are spread over eight groups — Chandigarh,Ambala,Rohtak,Amritsar,Jalandhar,Ludhiana,Patiala and Shimla. These are imparting training to total of 1,12,420 cadets in 1,178 colleges and schools.
