Two women died and 11 others were injured when two LPG cylinders exploded in a house in ward number 13 of Mandi Ahmedgarh in Sangrur district Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Satya Devi (65) and Balwinder Kaur (35). The injured have been shifted to DMCH.

Police suspect that a leak in one of the cylinders must have caused the accident.

According to the police, a number of families in that lane were preparing for a pooja on the occasion of Ahoi Ashtmi when the accident happened. Neighbours saw fire coming out of Devi’s house. Although people rushed to save Devi, they could not reach her in time.

Kaur was passing through the lane when a sharp object from the explosion hit her, witnesses said. She too died on the spot. Devi’s daughter-in-law Monica suffered injury on her limbs and is admitted in a local hospital, however she is reportedly safe. The house suffered much damage in the accident. Most of the others who were injured were commuters who were passing through that lane or neighbours who tried to save the family.

DSP Gurmeet Singh said that the fire brigade was on the spot till the time of filing this report.
