Two days after the alleged assault on a patient by two doctors at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) Shimla, a video of which went viral on social media, another video surfaced on Wednesday showing a heated argument between the patient, Arjun Singh, and Senior Resident Dr Raghav Narula.

In the approximately 10-second video, the doctor is heard telling the patient, “You are merely four years elder to me”. The video also shows Narula moving away from the patient’s bed.

Meanwhile, the IGMC Shimla administration was yet to submit its probe report to the office of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu till the filing of this report. Sources said the IGMC administration intended to submit the report through officiating Secretary (Health) Kadeem Sandeep Vasant.

When contacted, Vasant said, “The IGMC administration is scheduled to submit its report pertaining to the alleged assault between the doctor and the patient today. At present, the administration is in the process of compiling the report. Most probably, it will be filed by late night. All aspects of the incident need to be inquired into”.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had ordered that the inquiry into the incident be completed within 24 hours by Wednesday and that necessary action be taken at the earliest.

The patient, Arjun Singh (36), a resident of Kupvi in Shimla district who runs a canteen, on Monday filed a police complaint against the two doctors alleging physical assault. On the same day, authorities suspended Narula following the completion of a fact-finding enquiry.

On Tuesday, the Resident Doctors’ Association, IGMC Shimla, came in the defence of the two doctors — Narula and Dr Nikhil — accused of assaulting the patient. The State Association of Medical and Dental College Teachers (SAMDCOT), IGMC and GDC Shimla, also supported the two doctors, demanding an in-depth probe into the circumstances that led to the assault.

The association also urged the authorities to examine the actions of an agitated mob that allegedly stormed into the hospital and attempted to target the doctors, who were kept in the doctors’ chamber under security cover.
