India’s forests are shaped not only by what grows on the ground, but also by the fantastic world high above. Forest canopies, formed by the overlapping crowns of trees, act as living ceilings that help control the climate, protect wildlife, and offer some of the country’s most scenic views. Here are three of the most beautiful forest canopies in India:

Silent Valley National Park, Kerala

Tucked away in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Silent Valley National Park boasts one of the most tropical evergreen forest canopies in India. This last remaining rainforest in Kerala boasts one of the most captivating views, with towering trees and a multi-layered green canopy dominating the forest interiors. This ancient canopy supports an extraordinary range of life, including rare orchids, lion-tailed macaques, and endemic bird species. Often wrapped in mist and echoing with the sounds of insects and birds, Silent Valley was declared a national park in 1984 and formally opened to the public in 1985. Located near the Bhutan border, Buxa Tiger Reserve features a dramatic forest canopy shaped by altitude, rainfall, and rich biodiversity. The canopy here is a mix of sal forests, riverine growth, and moist evergreen patches. Tall sal trees dominate lower elevations, forming airy, sun-filtered canopies, while higher regions grow denser and darker with thick foliage. This layered canopy provides refuge to elephants, leopards, hornbills, and countless butterfly species. Treks through Buxa’s forests reveal natural green corridors overhead, often intertwined with vines and creepers.

Dandeli–Anshi Tiger Reserve, Karnataka

Part of the Western Ghats, the Dandeli–Anshi Tiger Reserve (also known as Kali Tiger Reserve) is renowned for its expansive forest canopy that stretches across moist deciduous and evergreen forests. During the monsoon and post-monsoon months, the canopy transforms into a multitude of shades of green. This canopy supports a rich array of fauna, including hornbills, giant squirrels, and even black panthers. Popular among trekkers and nature tourists, Dandeli–Anshi offers a chance to walk beneath one of southern India’s most visually appealing forest ceilings.
