Cop hammers wife to death

Gurdaspur:A policeman deployed with the Punjab Commando Police allegedly murdered his wife by hitting her in the head with a hammer in Gohat Pokhar village. Dildar Singh suspected his wife Jasbir Kaur (35) of having an illicit relationship with another man,police said. He had came home drunk yesterday and locked his two sons in another room before killing her,after which he escaped,they said,adding that the couple married ten years ago. A case has been registered against Singh,his father Piara Singh,his brothers Jhujhar Singh,Gulzar Singh and an unidentfied person.

Ranike PA seeks anticipatory bail

Amritsar:Sarbdyal Singh,the personal assistant of Punjab cabinet Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike,who is on the run after being made the main accused in rural development fund embezzlement case,on Saturday moved an Amritsar court for anticipatory bail. The case comes up for hearing on Monday. Police have already arrested three persons,including a bank manager,in connection with the case registered at Civil Lines police station.

Farmers seek MSP at Rs 2,200/ quintal

Ludhiana:Stating that the diesel price hike would severely hit farmers,Mandi Board chairman and president of the Bharti Kisan Union,Ajmer Singh Lakhowal,on Saturday urged the state government to increase MSP for paddy to Rs 2,200 per quintal. Lakhowal was present in circuit house to overview the arrangements regarding paddy procurement. The procurement will begin from October 1.

Cops fish out body from canal

Jalandhar:Police fished out a body from a sewage nullah near the Pathankot bypass chowk here on Saturday. While police have not ruled out murder,no one has claimed the body.

‘Non teaching work after school hours’

Jalandhar:The Punjab government has barred its teachers from undertaking any non-teaching assignment,including election work,during school hours. The Director General School Education (DGSE) office issued instructions stating: “Teaching staff will be put on the duties of roll revision and election works on holidays and non teaching days”,the order reads.

Sikh bodies slam Canadian FM

Jalandhar:The SAD (Panch Pardani) and the Dal Khalsa have taken exception to statements by Canada’s Foreign Minister John Baird,who had assured his Indian counterpart that action would be taken against Sikh Canadians who support the Khalistan cause in Punjab. Both the political parties have urged the Canadian government to not get misled by “the Indian government’s propaganda against the protagonists of Khalistan.”
