Union Minister for Commerce,Industry and Textiles Anand Sharma on Thursday announced the setting up of the National Institute of Design (NID) in Kurukshetra and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Panchkula. He also declared the Manesar-Bawal Investment Region as a National Manufacturing Investment Zone while addressing mediapersons, along with Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Asked about Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy,Sharma said: At present, the Centre has been put on hold but there is a lesser opposition from the states now. It is the right of each state to implement or not to implement the policy. One states decision cannot be binding on the other.
However, since the implementation of FDI,we have seen huge investment, reflecting the faith of foreign investors. India continues to be among the top-most favourite destinations for foreign investors, said Sharma, who is spearheading the Centres initiative to revive a cabinet resolution that allows FDI in the country.
He further said that the Manesar-Bawal Investment Region has been declared as one of the first eight National Manufacturing Investment Zones to be developed as green field integrated industrial townships. It will come up on an area of 383 sq km and see total infrastructure investments of over Rs 71,000 crore. Total estimated investments in the region will be in the range of 2.5 lakh crore in the next three decades. It will also provide employment opportunities to over 28 lakh people, said Sharma.
The Centre will establish a National Institute of Design in Kurukshetra, for which the state will provide land. The Union government will provide Rs 135 crore for the project, he added.
