As the process of filing nominations for PUTA (Panjab University Teachers Association) ended in Panjab University (PU) on Friday, both the groups announced their agendas for the forthcoming elections.

The group led by Khalid Mohammad from Department of Evening Studies said appointment of lecturers would be their prime agenda.

Khalid Mohammad said,“With the retirement of teachers, the number of experienced faculty has gone down, while, the number of students has gone up,leading to a lot of pressure on the teachers.”

Meanwhile, the other group led by Dr Devinder Singh from Department of Law declared they would root for fresh appointments at a higher scale.

“There must be young and dynamic faculty on the campus, which will facilitate the process of exploring new avenues in education at the university level. There should be direct recruitment of Assistant Professors in the university,” said Dr Devinder Singh.

The Khalid Mohammad-led group also announced that the culture of research had improved over the last year and they would seek more time to implement other planned projects. “We are also working on strengthening the existing infrastructure of the university,” said an office- bearer of the group.

The enhancement of retirement age of university teachers was another issue highlighted by the Dr Devinder-led group.

“We will try our best for enhancement of retirement age. There cannot be much dependency on the Supreme Court for this matter. Spoken words must be translated into action,” said Dr Devinder.

The scrutiny of the nominations will be done on August 12,while the last date of withdrawing nominations is August 14.
