Thieves decamp with tyres,caught on CCTV camera
A few unidentified men decamped with tyres of a Toyota Innova parked outside a house in Sector 43 here in the early hours of Sunday. In a complaint,PJS Trehan,director of news,Jalandhar Doordarshan,told the police that the thieves,whose act was caught on a CCTV camera,took nearly two hours to dissemble the tyres. Trehan said the thieves looked young and were apparently dressed well. He said the CCTV camera installed outside his house showed that they took their time to remove the tyres and stayed there between 2.46 am and 4.52 am. Meanwhile,a third person came on a bike,parked it some distance and joined them. They also took a battery,wiper and rear-view mirrors,among other parts. The incident came to light in the morning,when the complainant saw the car resting on a platform of stones. A case of theft has been registered at the Sector-36 police station and police were yet to examine the CCTV footage.
2 girls die after eating raw mangoes
Two teenaged girls died while the third one was referred to the Sector-32 hospital in Chandigarh in a serious condition. According to reports,the trio had consumed raw mangoes plucked from a tree sprinkled with poisonous substance at Bargarh village under the Naraingarh sub-division. One of the deceased,Binder,a student of Class V,had come to spend her vacations with her aunt, while Sunita was a local resident. The third girl Aanchal is struggling for life at Chandigarh.
Three die in separate road accidents
Hemant,a resident of Jandli village,died while his friend Jaspreet,who was riding pillion,sustained injuries when their bike hit a road divider on the National Highway-1 on Saturday night. Both were returning to their village from Ambala Cantonment. Meanwhile,a driver and a cleaner of a tractor died when their vehicle turned turtle on the Naraingarh-Peermajra approach road on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Iqbal and Mehanga. A case has been registered.
19-year-old commits suicide in Panchkula
A 19-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide in Sector 4 on Sunday. Navin Rana,a resident of Haripur village was found hanging from the ceiling fan around 8.30 in morning. His parents were away in a village in Hisar for the last one week. The body was first seen by his father,Dilbahadur Rana.
Police officials said one of his neighbours saw him drinking water in the house courtyard. The deceased had also spoken to his father around 6.30 in the morning. His father claims he sounded fine and did not expect him to take such an extreme step. He had also attended a religious function in his neighbourhood last night and looked cheerful. He was talking to someone over the phone during the entire event, said police. Navin worked as a driver and is survived by his parents and a sister. The body was handed over to parents after postmortem. No suicide note was recovered from the spot and a case has been registered in Sector 2 police station under Section 174 of IPC.
6,592 appear for Panjab University CET
According to information received from the Controller of Examination,Panjab University,Chandigarh,the Common Entrance Test (CET) for 2010-2011 was conducted at 17 centres,for which 6,592 candidates had applied. Nearly 88-89 per cent of the candidates appeared for the test. The approximate break-up of the candidates was as following: Law:1,857,Hotel Management: 297,Biotechnology: 284,Computer Science: 130,Physics-Chemistry-Maths: 2,680 and Physics-Chemistry-Biology: 2,379.
