11-year-old dies as jeep rams cycle
CHANDIGARH: An 11-year-old boy was crushed to death in a road accident on Wednesday. A jeep reportedly rammed into Usmans bicycle in Dhanas village. The police said the accident occurred around 9 am when the boy was crossing the road. He was severely wounded and rushed to the Sector-16 Government Multi Specialty Hospital,where he later succumbed during treatment. The victim was a student of Class III in a government school in Dhanas and his father Arsif is a labourer. The police claimed to have arrested the jeep driver,Narinderpal Singh,who is a resident of Sarangpur village,on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving under Section 304A of the IPC.
Bombshell found in garbage processing plant
CHANDIGARH: A bombshell was recovered at the garbage processing plant in Dadumajra village on Wednesday. The police was informed when some employees working at the garbage plant spotted a bomb like object while segregating waste. A police team along with the bomb squad reached the spot and took the object into custody. The police said it was a bombshell and has been buried in a pit covered by sandbags. Army officials were also informed,said the police. A daily diary report has been filed.
Parwanoo scooter factory gutted
PARWANOO: Fire broke out in the Savvy Go unit,which manufactures battery-operated scooters and cycles,on Wednesday morning. Fire tenders from Baddi,Solan and Pinjore controlled the flames after four hours. According to fire officer,Parwanoo,S S Pundir,the fire had already engulfed the entire factory when they reached. There are a total of 25 fire hydrants in Parwanoo but many of them were dry,hampering the operations. Surinder Vashisht,executive engineer,Himachal Urban Development Authority,Parwanoo,claimed that the pipes of the Fire department were leaking and several litres of water went waste. According to Jatin Patel,incharge of the factory,200 scooters and 500 cycles,ready to be delivered were gutted. The raw material for 500 scooters and 1,000 cycles also turned to ashes. The exact cause of fire was yet to be ascertained.
Inscol Academy offers nursing courses in US
CHANDIGARH: Inscol Academy and Valparaiso University,USA,have tied up to offer advanced programmes for nurses who aspire to upgrade their educational qualification. According to the Inscol Academy,the partnership offers study options in the US. On completion of the courses and passing the NCLEX,nurses can work in US and also take up jobs as nursing educators. Nurses are in great demand in US and other developed countries, said a press release. Two options are available for a GNM diploma nurse to upgrade to Bachelor of Science in Nursing and for a BSc degree nurse to upgrade to Masters of Science in Nursing Education.
35-year-old heart patient gets new lease of life
PATIALA: Doctors at the Patiala Heart Institute (PHI) claimed to have successfully treated a 35-year-old man who suffered a heart attack,with angioplasty. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday,cardiologists Dr Pramod Jaiswal and Dr Biswajit Maharana stated that Kaithal resident,Makhan Singh,suffered a heart attack and was admitted at PHI. They said that after initial treatment,an angiography test was conducted which showed severe blockage of Left Main Coronary Artery. In such conditions,normally an urgent bypass surgery is recommended but keeping in view the age of the patient,the panel of doctors discussed the treatment options and the blockage was cleared without bypass surgery. The blockage was opened by implanting a stunt by angioplasty. The artery opened completely to its natural calibre,giving the patient a new lease of life,claimed doctors. Meanwhile,doctors warned against the use of tobacco products as it is the reason behind heart disease at a young age,apart from wrong dietary habits.
Cancer awareness camp held
CHANDIGARH: Several villagers turned up for a cancer awareness camp organised by NGO Sahayta Cancer Sahyog,in association with DLF and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) partner Mamta,at the primary health centre at Dhanouran village,near Sarangpur on Wednesday. Members of the NGO,some of who are cancer survivors,and the visiting physician urged women to periodically go for mammography and pap smear test to detect breast and cervix cancer at an early stage besides self-examination of breasts once every month. Sahayta also helps poor patients get free cancer treatment at the PGI through funds generated from donors and selling items like greeting cards and coffee mugs.
World Vitiligo Day: New treatments discussed
CHANDIGARH: A special three-day campaign on skin disorder vitiligo began at the National Skin Hospital,Mansa Devi Complex,on the occasion of World Vitiligo Day on Wednesday. Patients from the tricity,Punjab,Haryana,Himachal,Rajasthan and J-K are attending the camp. Dr Vikas Sharma said vitiligo,characterised by white patches on the skin,is probably one of the earliest known diseases and also one of the most misunderstood. In the last 4-5 years,the focus of research has been on finding new treatment modalities and strategies for vitiligo. The results have been very encouraging. The advent of new molecules have revolutionised the entire therapeutic approach. The change is not confined to dermatological pharmacotherapy but advent of new lasers and lights have increased the treatment options for the disease, he added.
Teachers must tackle attention deficit disorder among children
MOHALI: An orientation programme on attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was organised for teachers of Small Wonders School and Smart Wonders School on Wednesday. Dr Simi Waraich,a psychiatrist from Fortis,was the key speaker. Explaining ADHD behaviour and various causes behind it,Dr Waraich said timely intervention can go a long way in correcting the disorder.
Dr Waraich also shared some valuable tips on how educators can tackle attention deficit disorder among children. Instructions to children should be brief and repetitive. There should not be too much information at a time as children tend to lose track,she suggested. Underlying the importance of reward,Dr Waraich said praise could work wonders where even punishment or reprimand fails.
