AMRITSAR: 15 Infantry Division marked the 62nd Infantry Day on Tuesday by laying wreaths and holding prayers for soldiers who died fighting for the country. The function was organised at the Dograi War Memorial,Khasa. GOC,Panther Division,Maj Gen Balbir Pama,Deputy GOC Brigadier A K Ganguly and Commander,Dograi Brigades,Brigadier Dilawar Singh paid tributes along with others. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the soldiers. Maj Gen Pama took a ceremonial salute and reminded the soldiers that it was on this day in 1947 that the first Indian Army unit was airlifted to the besieged Kashmir valley,just in time to save the Srinagar airfield from falling into enemy hands. “Being the first day of the first post-Independence operation launched by the infantry,the day is observed as Infantry Day,” he said.

Dr Inderjit Singh joins as GNDU Registrar
AMRITSAR: Dr Inderjit Singh,the principal of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College,Ludhiana,took over as the Registrar of Guru Nanak Dev University here on Tuesday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajaib Singh Brar,Dean Academic Affairs Prof Raghbir Singh,principals of colleges affiliated to GNDU and other teaching staff,besides office-bearers of the non-teaching employees of the university,were present on the occasion. Singh has 32 years of academic and administrative experience. He did his graduation from DAV College,Jalandhar,and post-graduation,LLB and PhD from Panjab University,Chandigarh. He spent 21 years as commerce lecturer at Lyallpur Khalsa College,Jalandhar.

State Cong hopes to enroll over 20 lakh members
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress hopes to enroll over 20 lakh members at the end of its membership drive in the state,MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee said today. At present,there are 15 lakh members in the state Congress. A meeting of the MLAs,former MLAs and presidents of district Congress committees was held today at the Punjab Congress Bhawan,general secretary Punjab Congress Raj Pal Singh said. Leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal,R C Khuntia,MP and Secretary,All India Congress Committee,addressed this meeting.
Several leaders,without naming former CM Capt Amarinder Singh,criticised those who unilaterally decide to skip party events. Kaypee said so far more than 21 lakh membership forms have been distributed all over the state and another 6 lakhs forms will be distributed by November 10. The drive will end on November 30. Ashwani Sekhri,spokesperson of the state Congress was also present.

Mr Singh International final on Nov 28
AMRITSAR: The final round to choose Mr Singh International-2009,a contest for turbaned Sikhs,will be held at the Khalsa College ground on November 28. The contest is organised by local NGO Akal Purkh Kee Fauj headed by SGPC member Jaswinder Singh. Announced the date,he said the contest aimed to motivate Sikh youths to take pride in their turban and prevent the increasing trend among the youth to shorn their long hair.
