250 doctors attend workshop on ovarian cancer
Under the aegis of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI),a workshop was organised by Dr L K Dhaliwal,Dr Vanita Suri and Dr Vanita Jain at PGIMER in Chandigarh. Around 250 doctors from Chandigarh and neighbouring states attended the workshop on critical care and eclampsia,conducted by Dr Girija from Pune,Dr Mandrupkar from Islampur and Dr Suchitra from Kolkota.
Ovarian cancer is responsible for 50 per cent of all deaths from cancer of the female genital tract. In young women in early stage of the disease fertility can be spared by conserving the reproductive organs followed by chemotherapy, added the experts.
Health camp concludes at Sarangpur
A seven-day N S S camp,which was organised by the students of PGI College of Nursing at Sarangpur Government Dispensary here,concluded on Sunday. The sarpanch of the village Dharam Kaur presided over the function and appreciated the collective efforts made by NSS unit of PGI.
Two-day Nirankari Samagam kicks off
Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh Maharaj inaugurated a two-day Haryana Nirankari Sant Samagam on here Sunday with a message to mankind. He said jealousy,hatred and violence have shattered the basic human existence. Man is behaving brutally against man,he added. The Sant Nirankar Mission,therefore,seeks to strengthen the feelings of love,compassion,cooperation and helping each other,he said.
Two robbers held
The police arrested two persons minutes after they robbed a local resident of cash and a mobile phone on Saturday night. Sanjay Sodal,a native of Rampur in Shimla and presently putting up in Phase-V here,was on his way back home from work at a local industrial unit and when he was passing through Industrial Area,Phase VII,three unknown youths on a scooter intercepted him and asked him to hand them over his belongings. When he tried to resist,the robbers overpowered him and took away his mobile phone and cash before fleeing away. However,Sodal soon saw a police patrol party passing through the area. Following this,cops chased the robbers and managed to catch two of them while third one succeeded to give the slip in the cover of darkness. The arrested youths were identified as Gulshan alias Sonu of Nehru Colony,Sector 52,Chandigarh and Varinder Singh alias Nanna of Ghanaur in Patiala and the robbed articles were recovered from their possession. The police have registered a case.
Afghan national attempts suicide
A 23-year-old Afghan girl,who is persuing Bachelor of Arts in a city college,attempted suicide in the early hours of Sunday outside a house in Sector 16. The police said the girl,Saida,a student of BA final year in Government College for Girls,Sector 11,poured petrol on herself at a park outside the house of a man with whom she was recently engaged. The incident is said to have occurred around 2.15 am when the girl,upset about her relationship with the man who is also from Afghanistan,attempted to take the extreme step. The police said Saida,who lives at Sector 15,was upset over some differences with Abdulla Sami with whom she had got betrothed recently. The boy had shifted to a house in Sector 16 as some differences had emerged in their relationship,the police added. She has been booked under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code.
